Carmen DeCristo

Originating from North Carolina, Carmen DeCristo is a NYC based photographer and prolific portrait artist. An obsession with legacy and a life beyond death has pushed DeCristo to use her lens to constantly document herself and the people surrounding her. As her photographs explore the intersection of her queer and American identities, DeCristo draws aesthetic inspiration from her upbringing in the rural South, one rife with gothic yet beautiful scenery. Her current works focus on images of transgender community members, documenting the lives of people actualizing themselves at the antithesis of the culture around them, and enriching representation in contemporary American photography. In 2023, DeCristo was the first trans person to be included in the Fire Island Biennial, a near 50 year tradition in the queer haven. Her works have also been exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee, Greenville Museum of Art in North Carolina, La MaMa Galleria in East Village, New York, Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, Connecticut, Millennium Film Gallery in Brooklyn and more. When she is not taking photographs she enjoys exploring Brooklyn nightlife and dancing with her chosen family.
